These two Great Egrets playing at the Brainerd Levee in Chattanooga was awarded second place at the Photographic Society of Chattanooga's annual photo contest in December 2008.
Sister Cities (Chattanooga and Wuxi, Jiangsu Province China) participated in an art exchange in September 2009. The theme of the exhibit was the amazing Tennessee Valley scenery and the American culture. About 350 photos were submitted by Chattanoogans for this exchange; about 75 were chosen for the Wuxi exhibit and five of these (above) were taken by Russell. All of these photos were in the new Wuxi Museum where over 100,000 visitors toured the exhibit. It is an honor to have Russell’s photos being viewed internationally to all of the visitors at the new Wuxi Museum.

Russell received the S.P.O.O.N. Award (Serving, Passionately, Obediently, Overcoming Negatives) from New Covenant Fellowship for his photography and other services in December 2009.
Russell’s night photo of the IMAX Theatre won 2nd Place in NewsChannel 9's Heroic Drive Photo Contest in December 2010. He won a copy or their lavishly illustrated, oversized, hard-bound book, “Chattanooga's Heroic Drive - The History of a Renaissance!”
Russell’s photo entitled Great Blue Heron With Dinner won the People’s Choice Award for prints at the Photographic Society of Chattanooga's annual contest in December 2010. This photo also won an Honorable Mention as part of the contest.
